Kogi Joins Other Nigeria Assembly Speakers To Discuss Autonomy Implementation For State Assemblies

The Speaker of Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Aliyu Umar Yusuf joined his colleagues from the rest of the 35 states of Nigeria to discuss methodologies for the implementation of autonomy in all Houses of Assembly in the country.


This is contained in a press statement signed and made available to the media by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Yabagi Mohammed. 


Speaking on the conference, the speaker expressed optimism that full implementation of autonomy in Kogi State would face little or no challenge because it has a cordial and robust relationship with other arms of government, especially the executive. 


He stressed that the State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo is a man that is pro-autonomy for both  the judiciary and the legislature as advocated by the immediate past administration of Alhaji Yahaya Bello. 


The Speaker said as a body, the legislature in Kogi State has always had the best interest of the people at heart, hence the cordial relationship it has enjoyed with other arms of government since inauguration of the 8th Assembly. 


Rt Hon Umar, who used the occasion to also applaud members of the current Assembly for their show of commitment and legislative brilliance noted that their support has been the catalyst for healthy relationship with the executive.


Delivering his keynote address, Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly and Chairman Conference of Speakers of State Legislature in Nigeria, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin noted that the reflection session was put together to evaluate and review, assess and analyse as well as enhance and foster more collaboration among members and stakeholders for sustained positive impact and result.


The Chairman further proposed that the Conference should consider areas for further reforms in Nigeria's Houses of Assembly to include  Strengthening Legislative Oversight, Enhance Citizen Engagement and Participation and Promotion of Legislative Research and Analysis.


The one-day reflection session was put together by Partnership to Engage, Reform and Learn, PERL, and Engaged Citizens Pillar, ECP, in partnership with Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria.


The Session was also attended by Speakers and Clerks from the 36  State Houses of Assembly in the country.
